In an attempt to regain consumer trust, LastPass made cross-platform sync free for all users with unlimited entries support. Now, the company has stated another security flaw in the browser extension. Users are already looking for LastPass alternatives with offline and flexible password managers. So far, two options come in my mind. Enpass and SafeInCloud — we have already covered that comparison. In this post, we are going to pit LastPass against SafeInCloud. The comparison will cover parameters such as cross-platform availability, UI, features, security, data backup, and price. It will help you decide whether you should opt for LastPass or go with SafeInCloud.
Cross-Platform Availability
Accessing your passwords across multiple platforms is as essential as storing them. Both apps are available on every mobile, desktop, wearable, and web platform. You can use LastPass and SafeInCloud on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Android Wear, and Apple Watch. They have extension support for major browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. User Interface
Both apps are using standard iOS navigation with the bottom menu bar. The color scheme is different, though. LastPass is using a red and white theme. You can tap on the ‘Add’ button on the upper right corner to make entries. The major options, such as passwords, secure notes, secure browsers, are on the home page. SafeInCloud is a mixture of the hamburger menu and bottom bar tabs. The major options, such as cards, favorites, and search are at the bottom. Tap on the hamburger menu to access tags and analytical data. I feel SafeInCloud is due for a design makeover. It felt slightly outdated to me. LastPass did a better job here.
Adding a New Entry
Both apps offer varieties of default templates to add an entry. You can pick a relevant template and all the necessary details. LastPass lets you add a name, email ID, password, notes, and more. You can either add a random password or use the built-in password generator to add complex passwords. SafeInCloud is better here. Besides basic email and password info, it also lets you add a one-time password. That is useful when you are using 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) on any service and want to store the master password in an entry. Besides basic notes, you can also attach an image or files. I use it frequently. Sometimes, I take a picture of the screen and add it to the entry.
Features
SafeInCloud lets you add tags to every entry. So, you can simply tap on a social tag to access relevant entries. SafeInCloud also offers a built-in data check to find a weak, repeated, and expired password. The app also supports the iOS auto-fill login option, which Apple opened up to third-party developers with iOS 12. LastPass offers a security challenge, which analyzes the stored passwords and provides useful suggestions. You can also use the app’s built-in browser to navigate the web securely. The killer feature of LastPass is vault sharing. One can make a separate vault of entries and share the entire folder with other team members. Similar to SafeInCloud, LastPass also supports iOS auto-fill functionality.
Security and Backup
Both apps offer biometric authentication support on iOS and Android. LastPass stores all the user data on its cloud. It won’t let you choose the cloud provider of your choice. There is an advantage, though. If you forget your password, you can recover the account. SafeInCloud lets you back up the data on any cloud platform. You can generate an offline backup file or store the data on Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. The app generates a 256-bit encrypted backup file for security purposes. In case you forget the master password, then there is no way to recover your account as the app doesn’t have your credentials.
Price
LastPass follows the subscription model. Pay $3/month and access the app across all the platforms LastPass also unlocks advanced features such as vault sharing and priority support. SafeInCloud offers an OS-specific model. You will have to make a one-time purchase on both Android and iOS. So, let’s say you purchase the Pro version on iOS for $5. Now, you are set you enjoy all the current and upcoming premium features for the lifetime. With that, you also get Windows and Mac apps for free. If you switch platforms from iOS to Android, then you will have to make another purchase for the Android platform. Both the services also offer family sharing plans to share it with friends, family, and team members. They are usually cheaper than personal plans.
Never Forget Passwords
As you can see from the comparison above, both the apps have a different take on password management. LastPass offers more features out of the box, while SafeInCloud is more flexible in data entries, back up options, and price.
